• Turkey Tail

Coriolus versicolor (also known under the names Trametes versicolor, Yun Zhi, Kawaratake and Turkey Tail) is probably the most intensively researched medicinal mushroom in the world, due to its outstanding properties as a biological response modifier.

Oriveda PSP-50 is the most potent Turkey Tail extract commercially available. It is also one of very few fully certified extract worldwide, with guaranteed levels of the main bioactive and bioavailable compounds.

    About PSP-50

PSP is an abbreviation of ‘PolySaccharoPeptide’: now in general known as ‘proteo-glycan’.

ORIVeDA’s PSP-50 is identical to the original PSP as it was developed in China, over 25 years ago. In itself PSP is an improved version of the well-known Japanese PSK, which is even older.

ORIVeDA’s PSP-50 has been cultivated and extracted using the original methods. The only difference is a significant higher purity due to the more advanced 21st century pharmaceutical techniques. Only pure COV-1® mycelium (the ‘roots’ of the mushroom) was used for the extract, having the highest level of the desired bio-active compounds.

According to the original research the most potent source of ‘PSP’ is that COV-1® mycelium strain, which should ideally have been cultivated using so-called ‘deep layer cultivation’ (growing it in sterile laboratory tanks, in liquid substrate). This technique is standard in China but hardly used anywhere else, due to the high cost.

Cheap cultivation techniques are using rice/grains to grow mushrooms (solid substrate), but since it is impossible to isolate the spiderweb-like mycelium from the substrate in the end the final product is in fact ‘biomass’, not mushroom. It is contaminated with undigested substrate in the form of starch; levels can be as high as 80% (!).

Such products are not per definition without potential but in general their actual therapeutic effects are low and the value for money is poor. On top of that these products are in general not extracted, rendering them even less useful. They do not specify any bioactive compounds on their labels and a 2016 test report showed many of these product contained no beta-glucan at all, only starch(!!). Research found that the immunological effects of mushroom extracts are up to 10 times higher when compared against non-extracted powders.

Scientific research uses in general specialised, highly concentrated extracts to investigate the effects of these mushrooms. ORIVeDA extracts are comparable in both composition and quality, so the research results you read about you can also expect from our extracts.

Extracted using hot water followed by alcohol precipitation - the main bioactives are water-solubles with a high molecular weight according to research. Alcohol precipitation is a purification process. It removes useless matter and low molecular weight compounds and thus increases the concentration of bioactive compounds in the final product. The final product contains no alcohol.

    Health benefits of Turkey Tail

The effects in the body, when described in brief, are as follows. Turkey Tail PSP works on the immune system, so most (but not all) of its workings are indirect. It increases the number of white blood cells when this is too low, it will stimulate the creation and the activity of macrophages, T-cells (including T-helper cells, cytotoxic T-cells and lymphocytes) and NK (natural killer)-cells, all of which are part of the body’s defence system against pathogens. It has both direct and indirect anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and detoxing properties and supports the liver function (our body’s chemical processing plant).

Many patients have taken PSP consecutively for a decade or more and no adverse effect or contraindication has ever been found.

    Turkey Tail PSP-50 for dogs

Our PSP-50 is very popular with dog-owners because research (based on a similar product) showed good effects when used for dogs with cancer. Our product is cheaper and contains more active compounds than the researched product.

In the research the best results were achieved with a daily dosage of 100mg p/kg of bodyweight. Higher dosages were not investigated but might even be more effective, given that the therapeutic effects are dose-dependant.

Using the research report as a guideline the recommended dosage for our PSP-50 product is ± 70mg daily p/kg bodyweight. One capsule contains 350 mg.
